The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the killing of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a university in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with results revealed on this week.

Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was deemed to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response categorically refuted that any representative appointed by George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the union in May.
