Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Thrilling Overtime Win

The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player delivered the game-winning baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, securing the champions a winning beginning.

Houston's Alperun Sengun led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Grit and defence," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Before the game, Oklahoma's championship banner was raised at their home court, while the players were presented with their title rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

Indiana will have the chance to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
